Facebook To Acquire WhatsApp For $16 Billion


Facebook announced today that it has reached an agreement with WhatsApp founders to acquire the messaging platforrm for approximately $16 billion which includes $4 billion in cash, $12 billion worth of facebook shares and an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp’s founders and employees that will span over four years after closure of the deal.

WhatsApp currently has more than 450 million registered members using the service every month and more than 1 million new registrations per day.

In the published announcement, Facebook also notes that the leading mobile messaging company (WhatsApp) will continue to operate independently and retain its brand. In addition, WhatsApp CEO and co-founder, Jan Koum will join the board of directors at Facebook.
